Articulation

Clarity and precision in articulation are essential for playing piano sheet music.
Your tone should be energetic and rhythmic.

Accent every note, varying the accents each time you play. Once played lightly and up to speed, the ornament should flow naturally. It’s worth trying out this technique for the entire song.

Abstract

The dance song Don’t Start Now is written in an experimental verse/pre-chorus/chorus/post-chorus/bridge form. The sections are repeated twice before a long coda with chorus modulations.
This song doesn’t follow the traditional Pop model: parts are repeated in chaotic order.
The underlying dotted rhythm is also a signature of Dua Lipa , and especially the obsessive, compulsive side of her musical nature.

Although I tried to maximally simplify the arrangement, if you are not an advanced piano player, don’t try to learn this sheet music with both hands. Start practicing separately. Count outloud.

Articulation

Clarity and precision in articulation are essential for playing piano sheet music for Don’t Start Now.
Your tone should be energetic and rhythmic but soft. It should impart the feel of a disco track. To sound quietly, keep your fingers close to the keys and do some firm practice from the knuckles.

Don’t forget to bring dynamic colour to your performance quickly moving from piano to forte; play every new part with different volume:

• The opening phrase (bars 1-3) is sprightly and energetic, requiring careful articulation. The RH acciaccaturas should be short and snappy, with the precise harmony changes D-E in the third bar (listen to the track to catch the rhythm).
• The Verses demand a different tone-colour. Give the melody in the RH a beautifully graded, warm tone in the verses. Use slightly flatter fingers and imagine that you are trying to pull the sound from the keys rather than striking at them. Articulate tenderly. Guard against any urge to over-project and over-state. Think in long lines that Dua Lipa sings, not short phrases. Note the dynamic contrast in her voice.
• The pre-chorus (bars 13-16) continues using intimate and reserved tone with precise fingers’ release.
• Save a full weight and depth of tone for the Choruses. Aim to sculpt the chorus so that it emerges as a thing of real beauty, shapely, nuanced and expressive. Think about the destination of lyrics phrases; remove the hand completely during pauses in singing. Keep the phrases as long as possible. Pedal carefully in this section.
• The Post-chorus (bars 25-32) is a bridging passage between the verses and choruses so play both sharp and intimately, let the music relax before going back to the verses’ theme at the bar 33.
  Everything is repeated twice before going to the coda.
• Bar 61 brings a harmonically strange and hauntingly beautiful transition to the ooh-ooh theme. Don’t overthink articulation, be playful.
• The coda (bar 61 to the end) requires a full tone and a slight deceleration over the final bars.

Left Hand

After getting familiar with the RH, focus on the LH. This is one of those pieces where the bulk of the practicing will be devoted to an accompaniment. Learn the LH’s part separately and count outloud. If the rhythm is too complicated for you — play only one note.

The LH is generally soft throughout. Avoid tension in the wrist and hand (a danger with repeated patterns) by releasing the muscles swiftly. Practice the LH alone here to ensure a rich and mellow bass.
The patterns in accompaniment can become repetitive if not colored imaginatively and played with rhythmic poise.

While it might seem counterintuitive to use the left thumb to reach down for single bass notes, it ensures a smooth, decisive downward progression.

Pedal

The sustaining pedal isn’t strictly necessary in this style of music, but it will add resonance to the piano sound.
If you choose to use the pedal keep control of your pedalling and listen carefully for any smudges.
