Story behind the song
Regarding the meaning of this song, Tyler explained: \»It’s about the hunger to be somebody: Dream until your dreams come true.\» He added, \»This song sums up the s—t you put up with when you’re in a new band. Most of the critics panned our first album and said we were ripping off the Stones. That’s a good barometer of my anger at the press, which I still have. ‘Dream On’ came of me playing the piano when I was about 17 or 18, and I didn’t know anything about writing a song. It was just this little sonnet that I started playing one day. I never thought that it would end up being a real song.\»
The song is about the life in general, with an emphasis on the process of aging. Lyrics \»Every time when I look in the mirror, All these lines on my face getting clearer\» deliver a clear message that aging cannot be stopped and later song proclaims the idea that you should find your place in this life.
This song saved Aerosmith from being abandoned by their label. \»Aerosmith\» was their first album, and it sold badly, mainly because their label didn’t promote it — Columbia records was concentrated on Bruce Springsteen’s first album, which was released just a week earlier. Aerosmith got Columbia to release \»Dream On\» as a single, and the record helped to convince the label, reaching #59 in the US. The single version was more radio-friendly than the album version, and it did well in the Boston area, particularly on the powerhouse AM station WRKO. Columbia kept the band, and they became one of their prominent acts.
Joe Perry didn’t like the song from the very beginning. He explained to Classic Rock magazine in 2002: \»Back in those days you made your mark playing live. And to me, rock&roll’s all about energy and putting on a show. Those were the things that attracted me to rock&roll, but Dream On was a ballad. I didn’t really appreciate the musicality of it until later, but I did know it was a great song, so we put it in our set. We also knew that if you played straight rock&roll you didn’t get played on the radio and, if you wanted a top forty hit, the ballad was the way to go. I don’t know if we really played it much live, in those days if you only had half an hour to make your mark, you didn’t play slow songs. So it wasn’t until after it became a single that we really started playing it.\»
Tyler’s ex-wife, actress Cyrinda Foxe, wrote a book in 1996 called \»Dream On\» where she trashed Tyler for paying little child support and other misdeeds. Tyler wasn’t satisfied with the book, but they put up with it when Cyrinda discovered her brain cancer. Tyler helped with medical bills until her death in 2002.

A cover by the Glee cast peaked at #26 on the Hot 100 in 2010. Their version features actor Neil Patrick Harris who played the role of Bryan Ryan in the \»Dream On\» episode of the show.
Eminem sampled \»Dream On\» for his song \»Sing for the Moment\» from his album \»The Eminem Show\» (UG Score 6.1) in 2002. Steven Tyler sang in the chorus and Joe Perry played the outro solo.

Guitars
Joe Perry
1959 Gibson Les Paul was his main guitar with Aerosmith during the 1970s. On the Christmas of 1981, Perry was broke with no money in his pockets, so he decided to sell the guitar. It ended up with Slash of the Guns ‘N Roses, who kept it until Joe’s 50th birthday when he gave it back to Joe.
Here’s a quote from an article posted on the Gibson website of Joe telling the story behind this guitar:
\»I sold it in 1981, I think, I was broke and I needed money for Christmas. Then, around the time we were doing Get a Grip, I started thinking, I gotta get that guitar back. I had no idea where it had gone. But one day Brad came into the studio with a guitar magazine. The centerfold was Slash’s guitar collection. And there was my guitar, sitting right there. I called Slash and said, ‘C’mon man, sell it back. I’ll give you what you paid for it.’ But he wouldn’t part with it. I felt bad because every time I’d see him I’d bug him for it. And then finally I stopped talking to him. He never called or anything. Then when my 50th birthday came around, he got some idea in his head that he wanted to give it back to me. Which he did, the night of the party. We were onstage jamming with Cheap Trick.\»
Gibson created a limited series of Joe Perry 1959 Les Paul. It is a limited run of 50 guitars aged and hand-signed by the artist, 100 aged guitars, and 150 finished in Gibson’s VOS process.
Brad Whitford
I used to have [these years] a ’68 Les Paul goldtop P-90 guitar that ended up going by the wayside. [1]
Tom Hamilton
I have a lot of stuff and I’m always wanting more. I have an early-’60s stacked-pot Fender Jazz Bass, which I used a lot on the earlier recordings. [2]
Amps and effects
Joe Perry
\»We have two Marshall Plexis, one is a ’69 and one is a ’70. The ’69 Plexi has the KT-66s in it. I listen to them every day and determine which one I want to use. This is his main and the other ones are his backup. The ’70 has the EL-34s. This is the backup Plexi,\» Joe Perry’s guitar tech.
These Marshall Plexi amps are the 1959 model, but were built in 1969 and 1970, respectively.

Tuning
Guitars: standard tuning (E A D G B E)
Bass: standard tuning (E A D G)
Song key
The song is in the key of F minor.
Techniques
The main riff is best played using hybrid picking. The hybrid picking is actually very consistent and it’s the easiest way to play this riff.
The chord forms used in this riff include some rather large stretches, so it takes some time to get used to them.
Song breakdown
\»Dream On\» has unique structure, which looks like this:
Intro (16 bars), Verse (12 Bars), Bridge 1 (4 Bars), Interlude (4 Bars), Verse (8 Bars), Chorus 1 (6 Bars), Interlude 2 (7 Bars), Chorus 2 (6 Bars), Bridge 2 (14 Bars), Final Chorus (10 Bars)
Obviously, this is not a song written by a formula, since the chorus takes so long before it’s introduced (at about 2:05) and the bridge is the only section that actually contains the title of the song (\»Dream On\»). What’s more, just about each section is a different length. The first verse has 12 bars while the 2nd verse has 8. The second interlude has the same motif as the intro, but is played in the major instead of a minor and is 7 bars long! Then we have the bridge (the high point in most songs) at 14 bars and the out chorus at 10. This is a highly unusual song form. [3]
The intro is played mostly with the main riff and powered by a great lick, that consists of slides, hammer-ons, and pull-offs.
Verses are based on the main riff too, but the first one has a guitar fill at the end (alternating between the 5th and 6th frets of the 3rd string), while the second goes straight to the chorus.
The first bridge, which is between the first and the second verses, is played with power chords. Then it followed by a short interlude, which is going back to the main riff.
The chorus starts with power chords too but has a rather simple lick at the end with several vibratos, and end with a guitar fill, which was introduced at the end of the first verse.
The second interlude consists of arpeggiated riff, which is spiced with several slides and vibratos.
The following chorus repeats the first one, but instead of the simple guitar fill at the end, it has a more complex one, played with some bends and releases.
The second bridge has a notable emphasized vocal line, supported with a great guitar work, which consists of several power chords, followed by a set of whole-step bends, then it goes to a descending lick. Then there goes a lick, which has a lot of fast-paced double-stops with bends, and the second bridge ends with a set of double-stops and power chords.
The final chorus is pretty much the same as the first one but has an extended guitar fill, which leads the song to its end.
