Fix Error Could not find Java SE Runtime Environment

When trying to open a Java .jar file through the command prompt, such as using the command “Java -Jar xxxx.jar”, you might encounter the following error message:

This could be due to several factors, including but not limited to:

• Corrupted registry
• Missing Java path in your Environment Variables
• Java installation folder being moved

For example, we encountered this issue when updating Java SE to the latest version – we likely previously had a 32-bit Java installation, and when running the 64-bit Java installer, our Java path changed.

Error output when trying to run Java commands in Command Prompt.

Luckily, this is fairly easy to fix, as it just requires addressing one of the above problems with the appropriate solution. Follow our steps below to get your Java commands via command prompt working again, and leave a comment in the comments section if you encounter any further issues (or know of a better solution).

1. Delete all previous versions of Java (using “Programs and Features” uninstall process). If java folder is remains in “C:/Program Files/…”, please delete it.
2. Clean up your registry (delete your java key):

4. Type in ‘regedit’ in the edit field
5. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Uninstall

where xxx can be 100, 120, 130, 140 and so on.
for example:

• Type 7.0.100 in search field, finds registry key for Java7 update 10
• Type 7.0.120 in search field, finds registry key for Java7 update 12
• Type 7.0.180 in search field, finds registry key for Java7 update 18

Steps for finding registry keys for any version of Java 6

Follow format 6.0.xxx
where xxx can be 100, 120, 130, 140 and so on.
for example:

Java Runtime Environment not found error

I’ve been working on Aptana Studio and some JRE required software for a bit of time now , but since yesterday something quite odd happened, as suddenly the software that requires it threw me an error No Java virtual machine was found . Last thing I did before that was restoring my system files permissions thought safe mode as I had some trouble with that , could this have anything to do with it ?

I’ve tried installing JRE once again , no results. However when I run

I do get the following

Aptana gives me the following error

And other software such as Spine won’t simply start.

My .bash_profile is the following :

The output of echo $PATH is the following

The output of echo $JAVA_HOME is the following

And Java invocations on the terminal work.

Guidance will be highly appreciated.

After trying Peter’s suggestion the problem persisted but now in another context : «/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework» does not contain the JNI_CreateJavaVM symbol»

After struggling for many hours, and reading about people with the same issue opting to re-install the entire OS , decided to examine the issue from another perspective, the thing I first mentioned here that I believe went unnoticed was that I restored my permissions before this happening, so what I did was the following.

1. After reading a bunch of articles about Apple no longer providing Java support themselves but Oracle providing it, reasoned through it and realized that perhaps paths (Often called directories) from Apple’s final Java release may have not been strictly the same as the new Oracle releases, so decided to wipe out all recent Oracle Java Runtime Environment that I found on /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines and delete the Java Applet Plugin from /Applications (Just search for it on your /Applications path) .
2. Installed Apple’s last stable release from the following link.
3. Located where Apple located their Java releases : /System/Library/Frameworks/
4. My particular interest was the Java Runtime Environment , so I explored the JavaVM directory on /System/Library/Frameworks/
5. Found out that all Apple’s JRE previous releases reside on a directory called Versions that is within /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework directory, here’s where I noticed something rare, for some reason at the moment I restored file permissions from my Disk Utility Application , this directory was made inaccessible (By not giving the root user permissions to access anything in itself).
6. Went to my terminal console and inside the JavaVM.framework directory modified the permissions to that directory to be accessible for all users by running the following command chmod -R 777 Versions .

After executing these actions I went straight to my JRE-Required software and attempted to open it , success!

Things to learn from the issue.

• Oracle’s Java JDK/JRE are located in different paths from Apple’s. (If you are struggling with some other issue, verify your Java version to determine your Java installation directory)
• Apple’s disk utility application might define different permissions than expected for some files. (After restoring permissions verify that everything’s working fine, if not this may be the cause of your problems.)

Can not find Java Runtime Environment Says ArgoUML

I have properly installed jdk in my system, I have also set the CLASSPATH properly, but when I am installing ArgoUML, it shows a Message the No JRE found, what should I do?

I’ve just had this problem too, with a properly installed x64 JRE 8u45. Don’t know if the Windows exe installer expects an x86 jvm?

Anyway, download the binary package zip instead from http://argouml-downloads.tigris.org/argouml-0.34/ and unzip somewhere. It runs fine from there * with argouml.bat , you just don’t get a start menu entry added.

• EDIT: Your PATH must be correct to find the java.exe, easy way to check is to open a new Cmd shell (Start > Run. > cmd) and type java -version you should get something back from the jvm

Check if JAVA_HOME environment variable is set (it should contain the directory your JRE is installed to).

I have the same problem on WIN7_X64.

I have installed it manually, here some steps:

• Download the argouml-0.34 zip file
• Extract the archive to install_dir Ex: C:\Program Files (x86)\ArgoUML-0.34 (to make it visible for all users)
• Create a shortcut ArgoUML in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs with the following information:

Target: » install_dir\argouml.jar» Ex: «C:\Program Files (x86)\ArgoUML-0.34\argouml.jar»

Start in: «install_dir» Ex: «C:\Program Files (x86)\ArgoUML-0.34»
