Google’s ‘Shared Piano’ experiment lets you create music with friends remotely

Google’s online tools are great for collaboration, and now, the company is putting that expertise to use for something a bit more fun. “Shared Piano” is a new experiment from Google that gives you the ability to make music with your friends from a distance.

The idea behind Google’s Shared Piano experiment is to allow people to collaborate on music, or even teach lessons, from their own homes. Given the current state of the world, that’s something many people could find genuinely useful. To get things going, one user creates a session and then sends a unique link to up to 10 friends who can then join in on the fun. No logins, no installations. Google identifies the different users with animal emoji, too, which is cute.

In a brief test, I found that this experiment works basically anywhere. It launched on Google Chrome, of course, but also worked flawlessly on my iPad with Safari (default apps, please Apple). The new Chromium-based Edge works too. It even works on an Android phone, albeit with a smaller keyboard layout.

On top of working with multiple browsers, Shared Piano also accepts multiple forms of input. It supports a computer keyboard, a touchscreen, and even a MIDI keyboard!

Shared Piano is a simple tool for remote music teaching and collaboration that lets you play music together live on the web. You can play on MIDI or computer keyboards. Up to 10 people can play together at once. You don’t need to login or install anything. Just send a link to someone and start playing together.

Shared Piano is a Google experiment for jamming with your friends remotely

Lockdown has been especially hard for musicians around the world, whether professionals who play in bands or amateurs who like to noodle around with their friends sometimes. Google’s latest web-based experiment could help with that, allowing groups of up to 10 to play music together remotely.

Head to the site and you can then share a custom link with your mates so they can join your room. There’s a selection of instrument types you can mimic, including a drum kit/machine, marimba, strings, woodwind, synth, and regular piano — you can essentially emulate a full band if you can get enough people together.

It’s a neat idea, and it seems to work okay for me without too much latency thanks to the WebRTC real-time communications standard it uses (albeit just playing with myself on two devices at home). You can even connect up a MIDI keyboard rather than playing with the keyboard on your laptop/computer. I plugged in my M-Audio Keystation Mini 32 via USB, and because I’m using it with a recent version of Chrome that supports WebMIDI, it just works. If you have a mobile device with a touchscreen, you can use that too.

Shared Piano is only in beta right now, so expect the occasional bug or stutter, but it’s remarkably good considering. Aside from just messing around with friends, it could even be used for teaching purposes. Let’s hope it gets some new instruments and features down the line.

Приложение действительно реализовано очень интересно — настолько, что в декабре на 31 ежегодной конференции по машинному обучению и нейровычислениям NIPS получило приз «Лучшее демо».

Приложение использует открытую аудиобиблиотеку Tone.js, созданную Манном. Также для того, чтобы правильно реагировать на нажатия пользователя на клавиши, AI Duet задействует Magenta — библиотеку, построенную на базе фреймворка Google для глубокого обучения под названием TensorFlow, имеющего открытый исходный код.

Время от времени AI Duet реагирует на игру пользователя одной или более нотой, которые могут звучать необычно — например, ниже или дольше, чем нужно. What is a Start with One project?

Is this only about accessibility?

Not at all. While some Start with One projects are related to accessibility, other ones have involved dancers and older adults in Japan, amongst other communities.
