\n Guitar was modified when I bought it with a vintage looking squire strat bridge pickup, the finish was a cool looking transparent red strat style body with just a few small dings, the neck was strat size with a distinctive shaped headstock and had a skunk stripe, one of the tuners tends to slip now and again and needs replacing. I was very pleased with the build of the guitar which you would have thought it was a 6 or £700 guitar,
I am not sure what wood was used in the build but it has a good weight, the guitar came with a gig bag and a spare tremolo arm.

\n \n Sound — 10
\n wanted a guitar to play some shadows numbers at my wedding, used a gorrila amp and a boss se50 with custom echo settings.
The sound was spot on with a nice warm treble sound. The selector switch had a bit of noise on it but i sorted this with switch cleaner, the best sound is from the single coil bridge pickup which i think is off a vintage squire strat, the other two pickups are like lace sensor copies but these have a weaker sound, the tone controls dont make a great deal of difference, but i am not sure if the addition of the bridge pickup has had an effect on this

\n \n Action, Fit & Finish — 9
\n I think the guitar had been well sorted buy the previous owner the action was superb, with a great neck and tremelo, the pickups were well adjusted but the mid and neck pickup needed a tweak on the volume to match the single coil bridge pickup.
The guitar was almost mint condition with just a couple of small dings a light scratches
i have noticed on middle volume settings there is a slight hum, might have a check to see if any shielding is fitted, the serial number is just a stick on label i might write it inside the guitar, my se squire strat has no serial number anywhere i think this srat pack guitar just had a stick on lable at some stage.

\n \n Reliability & Durability — 9
\n I would have no problem taking this to a gig,but would take my Squire strat for backup ,the guitar feels very well built and felt as if it would last forever, the strap buttons are very solid and feel safe. The guitar seems to be very reliable and have had no problems in the 6 years i have had it, a little research on the serial number showed it was a 2003 model, the chrome plating and the metal finish show no sign of rust or corrosion the guitar has a nice balanced feel to it not like some neck heavy guitars, this guitar never seems to need tuning and does not seem to be affected by warm or cold rooms, maybe i am just lucky with this one, but for the used price they sell for i think they are a real bargain

\n I still play shadows tunes and some blues and country but now just for fun gigs with friends. Been playing electric guitar since 1964. If the A X L was lost or stolen i would buy another the tremelo is great. Own a 1980s Epiphone Sorento a 1970s Tiesco and a S E Squire Strat with neck shim, a Burns Marquee and a cheap Lap steal before buying the A X L i tried about 20 budget guitars, wish i still had my 1964 Fiesta red strat which i sold for £25 in 1969 < ouch >the worst american Fender i have owned was a 90s strat + with lace sensors would never stay in tune, it was always at the guitar tec trying to find what was wrong with it

\n \n Sound — 8
\n Like all strats, you get hum when near any other electric kit, but hey that’s just single coil pickups for you. Obviously hum isn’t noticeable when put through a clean channel, or with less than medium gain on overdrive. The inside was pretty well shielded when I first got it, and this probably kept the hum to a minimum. Pretty decent bonus that, as most manufacturers barely bother with cavity shielding at all. Sustain is identical to a real Strat. Once you’ve got the basics set up well (as on this guitar), locking bridges and fancy nut mechanisms make negligible difference, and in my mind are merely there for mental satisfaction for poor mislead people that have coughed up 1000 for an electric guitar! The 3 single coil pickups are labelled ‘EMG-AXL.’ At first I thought this was a shameless attempt of leeching off EMG’s hectically amazing reputation (being that of the best pickup manufacturers there ever were). However, it turns out Axl were kindly allowed to use the design notes of an EMG model single-coil when designing this pickup. Obviously, due to the price and quality restrictions, the pickups aren’t anything like real EMGs, though they put up an amazing fight in proving themselves in the world of other single-coil pickups. Their output, bold sound and frequency response range are nothing short of a small miracle given that they probably cost less than 10 each. As a result, this guitar sounds like it cost you at least 300 (that’s about $400 for you Americans over there). How’s that for unexpected?

\n \n Overall Impression — 9
\n If three words could sum up this reviewer’s opinion, they’d be: ‘value for money’. Great for playing anything that isn’t metal. Originally I compared it to other Strat imitations such as the Fender Squier. I can safely say (with full evidence) that it smokes them all, and I am thoroughly satisfied with my purchase. Because it’s Axl, you don’t have to pay extra for the name/label, you don’t have a stupid round head shape like a true Strat, and you get very good value as this small company is obviously trying to get a name for itself through thorough customer satisfaction. If someone stole it I’d probably be glad that it would have another life of music, as it didn’t cost me much and I seldom play it these days.

\n \n Reliability & Durability — 10
\n After a few weeks of playing, the strap buttons and machine heads became a bit wobbly, but that happens in any vibrating system involving threads. Nothing that a few twists of a screwdriver didn’t fix. This guitar is solid. The number of lessons I have learnt with it (which would have ended in a large repair bill had it been another make of guitar) is large and varied. It’s withstood being dropped on a variety of surfaces, left in the rain, wedged in a door frame etc. Mind you, it has the occasional tell-tale scratch and dent as a result. But even the dents are not very deep, owing to the dense wood (which also helps with sustain) nor are the scratches, presumably due to the durable paintjob/finish.
