Some people say it is 99% of Pachabel’s Canon. So that’s why I liked it immediately.

Here is a new song in my piano sheet music archive. The original amateur interpretation of a tune. This sheet music is created in a transformative manner. Plus music notes in the arrangement doesn’t copy any existing material.

Song is written in a binary verse-chorus form. Both sections are repeated before a short coda.

Articulation

Clarity and precision in articulation are essential for playing piano sheet music.
Your tone should be warm and gentle. It should impart the lilting feel of a lullaby. To sound quietly, keep your fingers close to the piano keys and do some firm practice from the knuckles.

Among the hardest facets of piano playing is controlling a lightness of attack coupled with playing at a faster speed.

If you are worried about the staccato dots, there is no need to be literal over them: the marking simply means a short release of a finger. Very often a dot is simply a means to shorten the duration of the note; at other times it indicates a sort of accent where we lift the hand but catch the note(s) in the pedal.

Right Hand

Listen to the actual track Memories as you begin to learn the arrangement, in order to balance parts in left and right hands.
In playing any piano transcription of a song, the aim is to give the impression of a singer (the RH) that is being accompanied by a sensitive pianist (the LH). Imagine a duet between Maroon 5 and the singer so color the two hands differently. Coordinating the parts may take some time to organise convincingly.

The RH here plays a melody (topline) and sometimes supported with a doubled-in-one-octave-lower note. Play this lower chord as gently and as evenly as possible. Because the second note is played by the stronger thumb finger in the RH, it can be difficult to keep the right balance of power. Your thumb should do little more than brush the lower note in a small circular movement.

Don’t forget to bring dynamic colour to your performance quickly moving from piano to forte; play every new part with different volume:

• The opening phrase (bars 1-4) is airy and melodic, requiring careful articulation. The RH acciaccaturas should be short and snappy, with the harmony sounding on the beat.
• Memories starts with a Chorus. Aim to sculpt the chorus so that it emerges as a thing of real beauty, shapely, nuanced and expressive. Think about the destination of Adam’s lyrics phrases; remove the hand completely during pauses in singing. Keep the phrases as long as possible. Pedal carefully in this section.
• The Verses demand a different tone-colour. Give the melody in the RH a beautifully graded, warm tone. Use slightly flatter fingers and imagine that you are trying to pull the sound from the keys rather than striking at them. Articulate tenderly. Guard against any urge to over-project and over-state. Think in long lines, not short phrases. Note the dynamic contrast in Adam’s singing — he evenly accents strong beats in every bar.
• At the little bridging passage at bar 51, let the fingers run light, and make a natural ritardando to bring back the chorus theme at bar 52. This pattern is repeated several times in this bridge. it is easy to memorize if you vocalize piano notes.
• The coda (bar 63 and to the end) requires a quiet tone and a slight deceleration over the final two bars; place the last chord with a rich, powerful sound and a decisive touch. Shape the bars in order to make a beautiful finish.

Left Hand

After getting familiar with the RH, focus on the LH.
The LH’s principal duty will be to provide a rock-steady footing. It is actually very easy to memorize if you think in terms of arpeggiated chords.

The repetitive patterns in the LH should be coloured imaginatively and played with rhythmic poise.

The LH is generally soft throughout.
Get your hand in position for each chord before playing it. A relaxed wrist will help you to balance sound. Avoid tension in the wrist and hand (a danger with repeated patterns) by releasing the muscles swiftly. Practise the LH alone here to ensure a rich and mellow bass.

Pedal

This piece certainly benefits from the added warmth of the pedal, but keep control of your pedalling and listen carefully for any smudges. Here you need to lift the pedal in the middle of each bar.
Use the sustaining pedal to colour chords without obscuring the melodic passage work in the RH. The Song should sound light, in the tradition of the pop genre; it will not benefit from being bathed in pedal.
