Piano Sheet Music
Pop Songs in PDF that I Transcribed
👼🏼 Conan Gray — Heather Piano Sheets
Also know as I Wish I Were Heather .
Easy piano & vocal (🎤) music notes plus harmonic chords for guitar (🎸).
Difficulty: Beginner.
💾 Save PDF ( 48 KB , 3 pages )
Preview Sheet Music (Campus networks don’t support GoogleDrive, use another network)
💡 As I learned, many of you are self-taught piano players and never had a piano class. I try to cover how to learn and memorize this sheet music.
🎧 About Conan Gray — Heather
📀 The song, Heather , was released on August 20, 2020 . Listen Heather by Conan Gray on Spotify, see Wikipedia entry for more details.
👶 I aim to make transcriptions that take maximum from vocal and melodic lines but are suitable for sight-reading by those with upper elementary skills.
🔇 Conan Gray presents us with a wide range of dynamics (changes in sound volume levels). I didn’t add these signs to the score because it makes sight-reading harder.
📝 Common Practical Tips for Pianists
🧠 How to Memorize Sheet Music
- 🙈 From the very beginning, memorize the score. Use the sheet music as a hint and avoid looking at a paper sheet (or a monitor) as long as you can when rehearsing the music piece.
- ✌️ Thankfully, the song follows the traditional dual structure for a Pop song — an easy verse-chorus form. The song parts consist of four-bar phrases and are repeated. The verse/chorus repetitions make learning and practicing the piece relatively straightforward.
- 🔠 In the left hand there are only four chords (♭♯) . The progression is repeated throughout the song as quarter (♩) notes. It takes nothing to remember only four chords instead of 100 bars of a tricky accompaniment pattern.
- 🤛🏽 Block all the notes in a complicated bar in a chord. Play the notes as an original melody and as the chord in turns until you memorize the bar.
- 💭 Mental repetition is the rule of all musicians: combine cycles of playing when sight-reading, playing by heart, and repetition in your mind only. The last one is the stage when you might fall asleep.
🚃 When driving in a car or bus, pretend like you are playing on your bag . - ✂ And the last, be artistic, be creative. Take correction fluid and a black pen and add or delete whatever you want in this arrangement.
🕹️ How to Play Heather by Conan Gray Sheet Music
🛠️ Easy Technique
👋 There is no need to learn hands separately — the score is very easy. The right hand here plays a main melody (topline) and the left hand provides some harmony and rhythm (accompaniment).
🔂 Listen to the actual track Heather as you begin to learn the transcription. Imagine you playing it — what’s your tone? Which phrases are legato and which is staccato? Where would you put dynamic changes?
👏🏼 Clap the hands to memorize the rhythm.
🎙️ Try singing the melody la-la-la or ta-ta-ta as you play, so you can easily memorize the notes.
📌 Practice slowly with an obvious emphasis on the topline while playing the accompaniment as gently and calm as possible:
- 🙌 Use the tips of your fingers to achieve an even, clean sound.
- 🤙 Focus on shorter fingers (5th and 4th) until they feel and sound strong in the both hands. Keep your wrist and hand loose and relaxed.
- 💬 Notice that the phrasing in the right hand is short but each phrase is longer than one bar. Always think over the bar and into the next one. Bar lines are the enemy. The notes should be even, but the emphasis on the first note of each phrase, not of each bar (accent the first beat in the left hand only!).
- ✋ The left hand here always has a mild sound . Don’t attack the keys, put the fingers on the keys like a machine does. Depress the fingers at the same time, and try to make both notes of equal weight. When playing chords, rotate your hand towards the shorter 4th and 5th fingers and keep the thumbs light to voice each chord effectively by giving the lower note greater emphasis, tone and shape to produce a deep, almost bell-like, sound.
- 👎🏻 Make a slight emphasis on the bottom note of a chord . When you are bored of the simple chords — arpeggiate them.
Get your hand in position for each chord before playing it. Move the elbow horizontally as the chords ascend and descend. Instead of twisting the left hand to the left to reach the next lower chord in the progression, move your arm closer to the black keys , thus allowing for the hand to remain in a linear, more natural position. - 👍 While it is counterintuitive to use the left thumb to reach down for single bass notes , it ensures a smooth, decisive downward progression.
⏱ In the last phase of learning a piece gradually increase your tempo. Here, the use of a metronome app is vital as you work on rhythmic partnerships between both hands. Follow the suggested tempo BPM. Modern pop music contains a firm beat. Become aware of the underlying pulse and accent where the stronger beat falls but remember that more is less. Avoid over-using your left hand. Aim at simple and clear playing.
👨🏽🎤 In playing any piano transcription of a song, the aim is to give the impression of a singer (the right hand) that is being accompanied by a sensitive pianist (the left hand). Focus on soloing with the right hand without relying on the accompaniment in the left hand. Imagine a duet between a band and a singer, so color the two hands differently. Coordinating the parts may take some time to organize convincingly.
🦶🏽 I recommend a pedal change for every chord that is written above the staves for a fabulous resonance at the end of phrases/sections.
