How Insensitive

How Insensitive (Insensatez in Portuguese) is a bossa nova classic written by Antonio Carlos Jobim. In this lesson, you will learn how to play the melody of How Insensitive, how to solo over its chord changes, and you will have a look at some typical bossa nova intros.

How insensitive has been recorded by a lot of musicians, including Joao Gilberto, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, Charlie Byrd, Chet Atkins, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Emily Remler, Bireli Lagrene, Sting, Iggy Pop, and many more.

The most notable jazz guitar versions are those of Wes Montgomery, Pat Martino, and Pat Metheny, especially his live version of 1993, which you can see below.

How Insensitive was Jobim’s homage to Frédéric Chopin.

The song resembles Chopin’s Prelude, Op. 28 (No. 4), in harmony as well as melody, as you can hear below.

How Insensitive – Chord Melody Arrangement

Here is the melody of How Insensitive, arranged in a way you would play it in a jazz trio with drum and bass.

I harmonized the melody sparingly in order to get a clear distinction between the melody and the accompaniment.

Listen & Play Along

  • Bar 3: diminished chord with a b13. This voicing is like a (C) 13th chord with a raised root or an (F#) 7#9 chord with the 5th in the bass.
  • Bar 7: the first chord is a Dm6 shape, a substitute for Bm7b5.
  • Bar 9-10: the accompaniment goes from Bbmaj7 to Bb6/9.
  • Bar 11-12: the same thing as above, the chords go from Ebmaj7 to Eb6/9.
  • Bar 16-20: some octaves and chords à la Wes Montgomery.
  • Bar 23: I play the vanilla Dm here without the 7.

How Insensitive – Harmonic Analysis

How Insensitive is in the key of D minor and has 32 bars which you can see as 4 blocks of 8 bars.

The harmony of How Insensitive is not very straight-forward and not everybody agrees on which chord to use where. Especially the first 8 bars can be daunting to improvise over in the beginning.

Here’s a scale analysis of the chord changes.

Bars 1 and 2 – D Aeolian Mode

How Insensitive starts on the tonic minor chord, Dm7.

The obvious scale to play here is D Aeolian (=D natural minor scale), but you can also use the D minor pentatonic scale or the D minor blues scale.

Here’s a fingering for the D Aeolian scale:

Bars 3 and 4 – D Harmonic Minor Scale

The next chord is a C#dim7, which can also be seen as an A7b9/C#, the first inversion of A7.

This is a chord a lot of people have troubles improvising over.

The scale of choice here is the D harmonic minor scale, but you can also use the D minor pentatonic or blues scale.

Here’s a fingering for the D harmonic minor scale:

Bars 5 and 6 – C Dorian Mode

On the Cm6, you play the C Dorian scale (the second of the guitar modes).

Bars 7 and 8 – C Melodic Minor Mode

The Bm7b5 in bars 8 and 9 can also be seen as a G7/B.

The scale of choice here is the C melodic minor scale.

Bossa Nova Intros

Here are some intros in the bossa nova style you can use for How Insensitive.

Most of these intros end on A7 (the dominant chord of Dm7) to make a smooth transition to the first chord of How Insensitive.

How Insensitive | Insensatez — Chord Melody, Single-Note Solo & Chord Shapes

Composed by A.C. Jobim

Tune’s History

How Insensitive — Insensatez in Portuguese — is one of the most played and recorded Brazilian tunes in jazz history. The Portuguese lyrics were written by Vinicius de Moraes and the English lyrics by Norman Gimbel. The form for this tune is particularly long and is said to resemble Chopin’s prelude in E minor.

The Nuts and Bolts

The long form makes it really fun to improvise over. While it is a standard 32 bars, this is a bossa nova and therefore is at a slower than usual tempo making the form seem long.

To summarize the harmony, the progressions are pretty neat. It begins in the key of D minor with a little change to C minor before returning to D minor at the end.

The two last sections both start on a Cm7, so be careful not to confuse them! A rule of thumb with regard to keeping the form on any tune is to always hear the melody in your head. This way, you’ll be thinking beyond the harmony.

How Insensitive: Comping Id eas

Here are some basic chord voicings you can use over this tune. Be sure to check out our bossa nova comping lesson for tips on how to approach this rhythmically.

How Insensitive: Chord Melody

Rhythmically, we are keeping this chord melody very simple, but there’s a lot to take in harmonically. If you are feeling adventurous, go ahead and try some rhythmic filler material here and there!

How Insensitive: Single-Note Solo

There is lots to chew on in this one. Typically, it is not expected that you would play bebop-style lines over this kind of music, but I took the opportunity to go ahead and give you some licks anyway!

How Insensitive: Backing Track

Here’s a nice little backing track for you to practice some of the material being covered here!

How Insensitive: Chord Reference Sheet

As always, we’ve also provided a chord reference sheet with a good amount of voicings to add to your arsenal! You can apply these to this tune right away.

Suggested Listening

-Diana Krall’s From This Moment On album released in 2006. This is a beautiful version and Diana Krall plays with some really great players here.

-Astrud Gilberto’s Astrud Gilberto’s Finest Hour collection released in 2001. The legendary Astrud Gilberto sings this beautifully with a wonderfully lush orchestra backing her.

-Joao Gilberto’s Joao Gilberto Songs collection. This is another wonderfully lush version with Joao’s classic voice.

-Sinatra/Jobim’s The Complete Reprise Recordings collection released in 2010. Frank Sinatra and A.C. Jobim. Is there really anything else that needs to be said?

In this guitar tutorial I’ll show you how to play How Insensitive on guitar. Insensatez, which is the original song title, was written by the great Tom Jobim and performed by such greats as Joao Gilberto. I’ve got so many requests for this Bossa Nova standard, that I just had to do this guitar lesson.

As usual, my arrangement is in chord melody style, which means that the guitar chords are played simultaniously along to the melody. They’re kind of weaved together. So you can play my arrangement of How Insensitive solo or with a backing track. This song has a beautiful melody with awesome jazz guitar chords. There’s a lot to be learned from this song!

Everything in this guitar lesson is explained note for note, slow and easy. There is a fast and a slow Playthrough.

Of course I’ve made the How Insensitive guitar tab and backing track for you to download from the links above. By watching my guitar lesson and having the tab next to you it’s really easy to follow along. Even without the tab, since I really explain ever single How Insensitive chords guitar and note in the tutorial.

I made four Insensatez backing tracks, 2 at slow tempo and 2 at regular tempo, so you can start practicing right away.
