Studying Guitar at Berklee

At Berklee, students develop the necessary skills for success on our instrument and in the modern music industry. Our faculty are experts in a wide spectrum of styles, and students are encouraged to specialize and branch out as they create their personal sound.

In all instruction, the Guitar Department emphasizes a solid foundation in instrumental knowledge: tone production, technique, scales, harmony, reading, improvisation, interpretation, rhythmic phrasing, groove, repertoire, and performance practice.

Coursework, Instrumental Labs, and Ensembles

The courses at Berklee are frequently updated to reflect the current musical landscape.

Guitar labs focus on specific styles and approaches to the instrument in the format of small-group lessons. Guitar ensembles explore a wide variety of genres and include performance opportunities at the end of each semester. Our faculty create the curriculum for these courses based on their professional experience.

Labs and ensembles are required as part of the performance core curriculum and for many of the majors. Each semester, our department offers over 100 choices for specific topics.

Ensembles

Ensembles at Berklee, offered through the Ensemble Department, provide students with the opportunity to work with other instrumentalists.

Through ensemble study, students will:

• broaden their experience in diverse genres,
• expand their network of colleagues,
• develop effective rehearsal techniques,
• expand repertoire,
• learn time management for learning new music,
• explore arranging techniques,
• strengthen in their role as a rhythm section player, and
• develop group playing experience.

Ensembles are leveled courses that are offered in hundreds of sections that each focus on a specific style or approach. Students may choose these ensembles based on their ensemble ratings, which are assessed during placement auditions. These ensemble auditions are required upon entrance to the college and are offered for optional retakes each semester at midterms and finals.

Faculty

Private instruction is central to your Berklee education. Our guitar faculty are experienced professional musicians and dedicated educators. Berklee has the largest guitar faculty in the world and includes all styles. Students may decide to study with one teacher or change teachers and styles as often as they choose. Berklee College of Music was the first institution of higher education to grant a degree with guitar as the principal instrument. To this day, Berklee’s Guitar Department remains the largest and most stylistically diverse guitar program in the world.

Financial assistance is available for Berklee Online degree programs. This assistance may come from a variety of sources including federal awards, outside scholarships, and private loans.

Federal financial aid is not available for non-degree programs. Non-degree students typically finance their costs out-of-pocket or with a private loan. Review our payment options.

Graduation

Because we must coordinate with the Boston campus for Commencement, it is essential that students planning to walk in the ceremony submit their graduation application by 12:00 midnight ET on December 1. If you submit your application late, you will need to wait until the following year to walk.

We ask all students planning to graduate within the current academic year to apply for graduation by December 1, regardless of their plans to participate in Commencement. Late application for students who do not wish to walk will result in processing delays for your academic record and diploma, and your name may not be listed in the ceremony program.

Great question! Walking in Commencement and graduating are two separate things.

You can walk in Commencement when you are nine (9) credits or less away from completing your degree requirements by the end of the spring term. Please note: Berklee Online degree students are not required to walk in Commencement in Boston.

You graduate when you have met all of the following criteria:

• Attained at least a 2.70 cumulative GPA in concentrate courses
• Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00
• Fulfilled all program requirements AND completed a minimum of 120 credits for a single major or 165 for a dual major
• Completed a minimum of 60 institutional credits for a single major or 105 institutional credits for a dual major
• Fulfilled all financial obligations to the college

Note Walking across the stage in Commencement does not mean that you have graduated. You will not officially graduate and receive your diploma until you meet all of the eligibility requirements.

You will receive your diploma within 6-8 weeks of completing your degree requirements. Please keep in mind that instructors have up to two (2) weeks to submit final grades after the term concludes.

Diplomas are mailed to the address you include on your graduation application. If your mailing address changes after you have submitted your graduation application, be sure to update us at graduation@online.berklee.edu.

Keep in mind that if you are walking in Commencement, you will not receive your official diploma at the ceremony.

Transfer Credits

The earlier you contact us with questions or concerns regarding your evaluation, the easier it will be for us to address any issues. Therefore, it is very important when you first receive your official transfer evaluation that you review the information carefully.

If you notice a remaining requirement that you believe you’ve already fulfilled, first consult our document on Common Reasons Credit Does Not Transfer. It’s possible that the course you are thinking of didn’t meet our eligibility requirements.

If none of those exclusions apply, please fill out a Transfer Credit Equivalency Re-evaluation form for the courses you wish to have reconsidered.

Sometimes, we are not able to locate specific information for a course online and we are not able to determine an equivalency, but we are always happy to review additional material which will help us make that determination.

Credit deficiencies are caused by transferring a course that is less than three (3) credits to fulfill a three (3) credit Berklee Online requirement. Students with a credit deficiency will be short of the minimum number of credits required to graduate once they have completed their program requirements. In order to be eligible to graduate, you will need to make up the credits you are deficient in.

While the Transfer Team does their best to avoid giving students credit deficiencies, it is not always possible. You can make up the credits you are deficient in by completing additional Berklee Online coursework, by applying for prior learning credit, or by completing additional external coursework in the area in which you are deficient.

Note all external courses will first need to be approved by the Transfer Team.

Народу на вступительные экзамены приезжает немерено. Некоторые отправляют заявку, а им отвечают:­ у нас в этом году все забронировано, подождите еще годик. Пробоваться может каждый, у кого есть 100 долларов. В поисках талантов приемная комиссия отправляется в тур по странам Европы и Азии. В Россию, к сожалению, члены жюри не заезжают. В моем случае все страны были одинаково далеко от Новосибирска. Изначально я хотела в Корею, но там все было уже забито. В итоге поехала в Валенсию.

Собеседование длится минут тридцать. Начинаешь с домашнего задания. На всякий случай нужно приготовить две песни: балладу и быструю. Я спела Alicia Keys «If I aint got you», они сказали ­ круто, молодец. Но это, на самом деле, ничего не значит:­ американцы всегда хлопают и хвалят. Дальше меня попросили прочитать с листа. Играют ноту до, с которой я начинаю ориентироваться и петь. Если проходишь первый уровень сложности, тебе дают второй, и так пока не ошибешься. Я провалилась сразу же на первом. Они сказали:­ ничего, не волнуйся, ты этому научишься.

Следующий тур — ритм. Мне хлопали и стучали, а я должна была повторить. Затем нужно было определить аккорды на слух, мажор или минор, и какие ноты туда входят. Все бы ничего, но аккорды играли не на фортепиано, а на гитаре. Они мне сразу честно предложили — если ты не очень разбираешься, давай просто определять мажор или минор. Я была не против.

Последнее, самое главное, — это импровизация. Спрашивают, в какой тональности удобнее петь. Я говорю, например, ре мажор. Они начинают играть обычные аккорды, а я слушаю, придумываю, пою, что приходит в голову. И вот на это обращают даже больше внимания, чем на домашнюю приготовленную песню. Заканчивает собеседование интервью. Спрашивают, чем занималась до этого, как пришла к тому, чтобы поступить в Беркли. Это тоже очень важно.

Ответ дают через месяц или два, надо набраться терпения. Когда мне пришел мейл, сразу подумала, что не попала.

Английский, кстати, это не главное. Для студенческой визы прямо перед отъездом нужен TOEFL, но многие люди приезжают и вообще не могут говорить. Хорошо, что все музыкальные термины из латыни, все понятно.

Стоимость обучения

Деньги можно достать всегда, есть варианты стипендий. Многим американцам обучение оплачивает государство. Правда, иностранцам на стипендию можно подавать только начиная с четвертого семестра. Я сейчас как раз этим активно занимаюсь. Если не дадут, придется ехать домой, в Сибирь. За осенний семестр я заплатила 18 тысяч долларов. Плюс проживание в хорошем районе рядом со школой — 1100 долларов в месяц и минимум 10 долларов в день на еду. Зарабатывать легально по студенческой визе сложно. Либо в кампусе при колледже, либо выступлениями в кафе и клубах, но с условием, если кто-то из музыкантов американец. Официально платят деньги ему, а потом гонорар делится между членами группы. Все мои друзья делают так.

Про учебу

Первые четыре семестра — это база. Сольфеджио, музыкальная теория, игра на инструменте или вокал. А через год начинается исключительно твоя специализация. Для меня это сочинение современной музыки и продюсирование. Когда я говорю «современная музыка», то имею в виду поп-музыку. Её проще всего продать. Мы учим законы, правила ее написания, секреты аранжировок, учимся работать на студии. Пока инженер бегает с отвертками, управляет микрофонами и электроникой, продюсер слушает, совпадает ли запись в студии с задуманным, по ходу вносит изменения в партиях, руководит. Роль продюсера — найти уникальное звучание для песни.

Что мне нравится в Беркли, так это индивидуальный подход к каждому студенту. Никто никого не обязывает делать именно так, как сказал педагог. Главное — это креативность. Например, у нас есть финальный проект по предмету «аранжировка». Берем песню в поп-­стиле и изменяем ее, чтобы было два или три новых стиля: рок, фанк, баллада. Ведь у каждого стиля свой ритм, басовая линия, есть теория, все давно изучено. Наша задача была расписать песню в новых стилях для каждого инструмента. В финальный день я отдала написанные ноты приглашенной группе музыкантов, и они с листа играли то, что я придумала. А запись потом отправили преподавателю.

Про работу

Образование Беркли не гарантирует рабочее место и визу после окончания колледжа. Дипломированным специалистам дают год на поиск работы. Сложнее всего музыкантам, которые учились на факультете Performance. Для рабочей визы с них требуют тур, составленный на три года вперед, cписок всех мест, где ты выступаешь. Ни один клуб на такое не согласится, поэтому студенты нанимают адвокатов, которые ищут разные лазейки. Помимо тура нужно выпустить свой альбом и закинуть его на iTunes. Последнее не проблема, если у тебя есть 100 долларов, но ведь альбом же надо еще выпустить! Мне с моей специальностью немного проще — нужно найти место, где я буду работать в течение следующих трех лет. Честно, многие даже и не надеются получить эту визу, просто наслаждаются еще одним дополнительным годом в Америке.

Что есть в Америке, чего нет у нас

Главная проблема в том, что у нас в России нет индивидуального подхода в музыкальном образовании. Из-­за этого нельзя развиваться. Слушаю, как поют знакомые выпускники Гнесинки, Глинки — у них абсолютно одинаковые голоса. Многие не знают, как музыку использовать в реальной жизни, как найти работу.

Мой двоюродный брат живет в Москве и зарабатывает тем, что сочиняет песни. Говорит, часто талантливые люди приходят в эту сферу без образования, делают все на интуитивном уровне. Если бы они побывали в Беркли, то на эту же работу тратили бы в три раза меньше времени.

Я не говорю, что в России все плохо, я еще не пробовала работать здесь по специальности. Сложно будет изменить культуру потребления музыки. У нас люди ленивые в этом плане — если появляется что­то новое, они просто не будут это воспринимать, не поймут.

После Беркли я не обязательно хочу остаться в Америке. Я бы попробовала и в России. Для меня ­ главная цель — найти работу, связанную с музыкой. Неважно, в какой стране. Главное, чтобы то, что я сейчас изучаю, было со мной всю жизнь.
