Jonathan Safran Foer — Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Genre: #contemporary_prose@mmgebooks

Jonathan Safran Foer emerged as one of the most original writers of his generation with his best-selling debut novel, Everything Is Illuminated. Now, with humor, tenderness, and awe, he confronts the traumas of our recent history.

Nine-year-old Oskar Schell has embarked on an urgent, secret mission that will take him through the five boroughs of New York. His goal is to find the lock that matches a mysterious key that belonged to his father, who died in the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11. This seemingly impossible task will bring Oskar into contact with survivors of all sorts on an exhilarating, affecting, often hilarious, and ultimately healing journey.

I have to admit I never would have read this book had it not been made into a movie. In fact, I had never even heard of it until I started seeing the advertisements. It appeared to have everything that a heart warming blockbuster should have in order to get an Oscar nomination: Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, 9/11, cute lil kid that reminds us of Haley Joel Osment. Why wouldn’t I want to read this book first?!

The book evokes all the right emotions from a reader that I think a really good book should. It makes you teary eyed. It makes your heart skip a beat. It makes you go «Awwe!» It is a 9/11 story so it makes you remember. It makes you recall that day, maybe think back to where you were and how you were affected. It makes you sad. It also makes you angry. More than once, I wanted to throw this book across the room. But I didn’t. I finished it. And I’m glad I did.

I immediately warmed up to the kid, Oskar Schell, as a character. He’s a cute little kid with a sense of humor, big heart, big imagination, one who asks too many questions. But as the central character, telling his story in first person, you have to remember how any real kid affected from 9/11 might react to losing a family member that day, how would they process it years later?

Sure, Oskar’s story is an adventure — both physical and emotional — as he finds a key that he believes is a clue left by his father and he goes in search of the lock it opens. But the real journey is Oskar seeking answers to questions, and in truth, trying to find out what those questions are.

Oskar’s chapters are intertwined with those told from his grandparents’ point of view and their own struggling relationship with each other and with losing their son. Toss in the author’s use of various photographs throughout the story to give the book an artistic point of view. There’s also lots of play on words and stream of consciousness storytelling that, at times can be very daunting, definitely set a certain mood when reading it.

Like I said, I probably never would have read this book had it not been for the movie, though I haven’t seen the movie yet and probably won’t until it comes out on DVD. But I’m glad I did read it. It was not time wasted, and for me, any book that both frustrates and enlightens is a book worth spending time with. . more
