Harold Arlen — Over The Rainbow (from The Wizard of Oz)

Гарольд Арлен (англ. Harold Arlen), настоящее имя — Хаим Арлук (англ. Chaim Arlook); 15 февраля 1905, Буффало — 23 апреля 1986, Нью-Йорк) — американский композитор популярной музыки, автор более 500 песен, многие из которых получили мировую известность. Благодаря своему хиту «Over the Rainbow» для фильма «Волшебник страны Оз», Арлен занял лидирующую позицию в списке Great American Songbook.
Родился в семье еврейского кантора, в детстве учился игре на фортепиано, ещё в юности создал собственный ансамбль. Достигнув успеха в качестве певца и пианиста, Арлен в двадцатилетнем возрасте перебрался в Нью-Йорк, где первоначально был аккомпаниатором в водевилях. В 1930-е годы был автором музыки для известного ночного клуба «Cotton Club» в Гарлеме, а также впервые стал предлагать свои музыкальные труды для бродвейских мюзиклов и голливудских кинокартин. В 1940-е годы сотрудничал с поэтом-песенником Джонни Мерсером, благодаря чему появились такие хиты как «Blues in the Night», «That Old Black Magic», «Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive» и другие. Израэль Каанои Камакавивооле (гав. Israel Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole, 20 мая 1959 — 26 июня 1997) — гавайский музыкант, исполнявший песни под аккомпанемент гавайской гитары укулеле. Играть на маленькой четырёхструнной гавайской гитаре начал с самого детства. Со своим братом и тремя друзьями он организовал свою группу The Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau, с которой успешно гастролировал и выпустил пять альбомов.

В 1988 году Израэль пришел в звукозаписывающую студию в 3 часа ночи и спросил, может ли он сделать запись. Он был настолько вежлив, что владелец согласился, несмотря на поздний час. Спустя 15 минут игры на своей гавайской гитаре Израэль записал один из величайших хитов — попурри из классических песен «Somewhere Over The Rainbow» и «What A Wonderful World», который попал в саундтреки к фильмам «Знакомьтесь, Джо Блэк», «Найти Форрестера», «50 первых поцелуев», сериалам «Клиника», «Скорая помощь», «Зачарованные» и других.

Его пластинки получали премии и попадали в американские чарты. В течение всей своей карьеры он пропагандировал и отстаивал права гавайцев как независимого народа, выступая за суверенитет островов. Он отражал это через свои песни и жизнь.

В 1997 году артисту во второй раз вручили награду местной Академии Звукозаписи — он победил почти во всех возможных номинациях, но прийти на церемонию уже не смог, поскольку был прикован к больничной койке.

Умер в возрасте 38 лет от болезни дыхательных путей, вызванной ожирением. На Гавайях его называли «Нежный Гигант» (англ.The Gentle Giant). Он и был гигантом при своём росте 190 см и массе в 343 килограмма. 10 июля, в день похорон национального героя, на всей территории Гавайских островов были приспущены флаги — он был третьим человеком, удостоившимся такой почести. А десять тысяч человек пришли на пляж Макуа, чтобы выполнить последнюю волю музыканта — развеять его прах над им же любимым Тихим океаном.

Over the Rainbow (Harold Arlen)

I was extremely disappointed with this arrangement! I expect a vocal arrangement to have one staff for the voice and a double staff for piano. This arrangement was a piano part with the vocal part superimposed upon it, sometimes in the wrong octave. Especially on the second page, which could not be previewed, it was difficult to read. My voice student had trouble reading it and was only able to follow because she knew the song. As a result, I have now had to order another arrangement from a reputable publisher to replace it. To pay $5 for one song, and get a poor arrangement, is ridiculous. I will pay $15 for 75 songs that are in usable condition. You lost a customer.

Simple and Easy

Very simple and easy, but did not deliver a «full feel» to show the experience of the Wizard of Oz story. But, all in all, for what it was. not bad.
