Rednex. Cotton Eye Joe. Ватный Глаз Джо
Эквиритмический перевод песни «Cotton Eye Joe» шведской группы Rednex с альбома «Sex & Violins» (1994).
С 8 января 1995 года песня возглавляла британский чарт «UK Singles Chart» в течение 3 недель.
Народная американская песня «Cotton-Eyed Joe» («Хлопко-глазый Джо»), известная ещё до Гражданской войны 1861–1865 годов в различных вариантах, впервые опубликована в 1882 году, а более известная версия была записана фольклористкой Дороти Скарборо (Dorothy Scarborough) в 1925 году. К 1950 году было известно 134 исполнения этой песни, но всемирную популярность ей принесла запись шведской группы Rednex в 1995 году. Название группы Rednex — это искажённое американское слово «rednecks» («красношеие»), означающее «деревенщина» или более грубо «быдло». Участники группы создали образы таких персонажей Mary Joe (Karin Annika Ljungberg), исполнившая женский вокал на дебютном альбоме «Sex & Violins» («Секс и скрипки» 1994), Ken Tacky, Bobby Sue, Billy Ray и Mup. Ещё 2 песни с дебютного альбома «Old Pop in an Oak» и «Wish You Were Here» покорили некоторые европейсие чарты, но только «Cotton Eye Joe» был первым в Англии и 25-м в США. Вскоре после выхода альбома Мэри Джо была уволена, из-за разногласий с другими участниками группы. В 2000 группа с новой вокалисткой Whippy (Mia Lofgren) выпустила второй альбом «Farm Out» («На ферме») с единственным хитом «The Spirit of the Hawk» («Душа сокола»), после чего менеджеры предложили превратить группу в нечто вроде развлекательное шоу, и весь состав, не согласный «с этим цирком» быз заменен. Этот состав выпустил в 2002 году кантри-ремикс песни «Cotton Eye Joe 2002». В 2005 году Мэри Джо пробовала возродить группу, получив менеджерскую лицензию, но по окончании лицензии в 2009 году, снова весь состав был заменен, а с 2012 года и вовсе состав стал произвольным, набираемым для гастролей.
В качестве объяснения названия «Ватноглазый Джой» рассматриваются белизна глаз героя, даже различные заболевания типа бельма (катаракты), но я предполагаю, что здесь имеется ввиду другие качества хлопка — мягкость, нежность, недаром глагол «cotton» означает «ладить», «привязываться», «полюбить».
