Red Hot Chili Peppers — SNOW. Песня-переосмысление. О том, что пора бросить наркотики и начать делать зарядку по утрам.

Честно говоря, глядя на этих ребят, сложно поверить, что они в состоянии что-то переосмыслить. Они всегда напоминали мне четырех мальчишек, отбившихся от рук. Отчасти так оно и есть, как минимум с двумя из них: старина Энтони Киддис (фронтмен RHCP и по совместительству один из самых сексуальных мужчин, которых носила планета), благодаря идиоту-папаше, попробовал марихуану лет в 12, и примерно в том же возрасте, лишился девственности с подачи того же папаши (если верить всяким интернет-источникам).

Вместе с Flea (блоха) — прозвище парня с голубыми волосами — они еще с детства испытывали этот мир (и себя) на прочность и в итоге сформировали костяк группы Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Когда я читаю об их взрослении, для меня удивительно, как они вообще выжили при таком отсутствии инстинкта самосохранения. Впрочем, вроде как Кидис даже ломал себе позвоночник, поэтому без жертв не обошлось.
И да, бешеные мальчики вырастают и приходят к каким-то выводам, даже оставаясь бунтарями.

Snow — именно об этом, как мне кажется.
Эта откровенная и удивительно светлая по звучанию, словам и видеоряду песня — подведение итогов, некий опыт, которым авторы хотят поделиться после того, как прошли через наркотики, славу, беспорядочную жизнь и наркотики.
Сейчас, кстати, Кидис вроде как не наркоманит, он занимается спортом и держится огурцом, а главное творит вместе с другими ребятами, и творения его до сих пор удивительно заряжают энергией, причем такой, позитивной, созидательной. В то время, когда многие звезды новой волны пропагандируют упадок, декаданс, суицидально-демонические настроения, Перцы сохраняют бодрость, от их песен хочется жить, заниматься спортом, дурить и ерепениться.

Отдельное спасибо их клипам: многие из них фокусируются на людях, их поведении, их лицах со всеми морщинками и неровностями, но удивительно прекрасных при всем при том.
Мои любимые клипы — Tell Me Baby, By the Way, Can’t Stop (самый бессмысленный, но при этом ржачный клип, который я видела из их репертуара), Hump de Bump (уникальный клип, для съемок которого их впустили в гетто черные ребята), Dark Necessities, Dani California, Scar Tissue и Snow.

На Snow мы и остановимся.

В съемках клипа были задействованы фанаты, приехавшие на концерт Red Hot Chili Peppers. Их лица, такие разные и такие классные, сменяются кадрами с репетиций и самого концерта. Видео оставляет такое теплое послевкусие, и его хочется пересматривать время от времени. Это тот клип, который не страшно показать детям. Наверное, кстати, в этом заключается отличительная черта RHCP — в них до сих пор осталось много мальчишеского. Вроде ребята прошли и Крым и Рым, но энергия юности бьет через край в их композициях, песни у них драйвовые, иногда дурашливые и при этом очень светлые. Для меня это показатель. Музыка, когда от нее хочется жить, — правильная музыка.

Сразу хочу сказать: текст песни в чем-то очень завуалированный, плюс там, по-видимому, намеренно опущены все запятые. Читается как поток сознания. Наверняка отдельные фразы могут допускать разную трактовку, но я во многом ориентируюсь чисто интуитивно. Присоединяйтесь к обсуждению в комментариях!

Возвращаясь к тексту песни, нельзя не отметить, что слова здесь так интересно скомбинированы, что создают цепляющие звуковые сочетания. Они будто напоминают гладкую мелкую гальку. Ну, у меня такая ассоциация.
Очевидно, что песня сочинялась не с целью донести некий смысл «в лоб», но отчасти как такая благозвучная загадка, зашифрованная короткими фразами.
Многие исполнители, кстати, так «шифруют» свои песни, заставляя поклонников по всему миру шевелить мозгами и предлагать разные трактовки. Возможно, дело не в намеренном желании запутать, а в нежелании быть полностью открытым и откровенным.

Тем не менее, для меня эта песня исповедальна: желание начать жизнь с чистого листа.
Герой песни осознает наличие зависимостей, которые его губят, и хочет вернуться к тому вечному и ценному, что есть в мире: к морю, к небу. Вдохнуть свежий ветер, помириться с забытыми друзьями.

А главное — не охотиться за кайфом, а искать гармонию в своем внутреннем мире, в себе. Искать мир в себе. Это придает песне совсем глубокий философский подтекст и такие, глобальные, почти религиозные, ассоциации.

\n Yeah, Californication is good.

I didn’t find Snow hard, learnt it pretty damn quick. I used the tab from this site, and I had it down and grooving in the day.

Hmmm, it seems that ever since californication, the diffuculty level of the guitar and bass seem to be polar opposites. So a good amount of chili pepper songs are going to be hard for someone in their ochestra thing.

Anyways, Snow is pretty easy. Other easy RHCP songs are: Otherside, Californication, Under the Bridge, Give it Away (unless you want to do crazy fills), and Parallel Universe.

\n snow is pretty easy actually. if she’s not a beginner, she should be able to figure it out in a day or less. it took me about 10 minutes to learn.

when u look at how the line is constructed, its actually REALLY easy. its based on 2 chords, and the rhythm is perfectly in sync with the drums.
the chorus is basic root-5 double stops and the rhythm of that shouldnt be too challenging.

so if u ask me, yes the bassline for snow is quite a simple song to learn. if she knows how to hold a groove it’ll be easy peasy.

Story behind the song

Red Hot Chili Peppers’ lead singer Anthony Kiedis stated that the song is about surviving, starting fresh, \»I’ve made a mess of everything, but I have a blank slate — a canvas of snow — and I get to start over.\» [1]

There could be multiple takes on what the story behind the song could actually mean. According to some, the song is about two favorite drugs of Anthony Kiedis, i.e., cocaine and China White heroin. Since both of these drugs are powdery, white and look like snow, they could be what the singer is referring to. The lyrics could also point out towards a similar thing as he sings, \»So white as snow. Privately divided by the world so undecided\» where they could mean the partition made before snorting the drugs in your nose. Moreover, when he sings, \»The more I see, the less I know, the more I’d like to let it go\» he can possibly mean the more he uses these drugs, the less knowledge he has of what is occurring around him, also knowing that he should not be indulging in these habits and should let it go. Another aspect of the song could be related to the journey of how life unfolds, and how you come across failures. Even after you fail multiple times, you start over again, although it is hard to let go of what you thought was the right way to deal with life, and how you perceived things.

Tony Kaye, the director of \»Dani California,\» another song by Red Hot Chili Peppers, had told the press that he would be directing the video for \»Snow (Hey Oh).\» However, this was not how it turned out to be. Instead, the video was directed by Nick Wickham who featured the band’s performance on 18th October 2006 at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The video also featured fans in the lines and parking lot, who were gathered to attend the live performance of the song by the band.

The video is shot in black and white, and throughout the video, there is a \»happy vibe\» that is featured. The band members, the fans, as well as the people behind the scenes that make a live performance possible, but are usually ignored like their services, are featured in the video as happy people who have come together for one sole purpose, and that is to listen to the band perform live.

Although a lot of people connect the lyrics of the song to drugs and their addiction, the song could have an overall deeper meaning. When Anthony sings, \»The more I see, the less I know\» he could mean how different realizations that come in life are not how they looked like in the beginning. Also, the lyrics \»Deep beneath the cover where it’s all white as snow\» could mean how things look white and clear on the surface in the beginning, but deep down they are not, and are rather ugly and far from simple.

This guitar has three-tone sunburst finish, rosewood fretboard, and three single coil pickups (though it’s unclear were they Seymour Duncan SSL-1s or standard Fender Strat pickups). [3]

Techniques

The song is driven by a rapid alternate picking guitar riff by John Frusciante, which involves a lot of hammer-ons and pull-offs, so \»Snow (Hey Oh)\» can be a good song for practicing legato techniques, as well as string crossing. Frusciante also began using layering in his guitar playing on this album, so the song contains several overdubs.

Song breakdown

The song has the following structure:

The main guitar riff is played over intro, verses, refrains, and interlude.

The pre-chorus consists of diads played on the A and B strings. The main difficulty will be in muting all the unwanted strings. There are a couple of different ways to play this riff, one that John does live and one closer to the original studio version, where some melody lines are added. [5]

The chorus is based on the three-chords progression. [5] Interesting, that in choruses Flea’s line is also based on chord strumming, which is quite unusual for a bass player.

In the bridge, the first guitar overdub appears in addition to guitar lines from choruses. This overdub presents power chord playing.

In the final chorus, several overdubs create an arpeggio line. John Frusciante explained, \»Towards the very end of the song I created an articulated arpeggio using three distorted guitar parts, each playing one note of the arpeggio recorded onto a separate track. Normally if you tried to play that sort of line with a distortion pedal, you’d get frequency beating and the notes would be indistinct. But this way each note is clear while giving the impression of being a single guitar. I also played the same parts on a synthesizer, tucked so low in the mix that you can’t really hear them, but you can hear them, and it sounds really different without them there.\» [6]

The outro presents one more guitar line, consisting of unison bends.
