Finding the Date of Your Taylor Guitar

Need to figure out what year your Taylor guitar was built? It’s actually pretty simple. Taylor guitars have been around since the mid-’70s and have utilized three primary serial number systems over the years. Using these will give you the year of manufacturer, and for more recent guitars, it will even give you the exact date the guitar was made.

If your Taylor serial number is less than six digits long, that means the guitar was made between 1975 until the end of 1992. Here’s the breakdown of serials from that era:

Starting in 1993 and up until 2009, finding the year of a Taylor is as easy as looking at the first digits of the serial number. For guitars from made prior to 2000, you’ll find a 9-digit serial with first two digits denoting the year. For example, a 9-digit Taylor serial starting with ’96’ indicates a guitar made in 1996.

Starting in 2000, this same format was used but expanded by two digits to accommodate the full year. A Taylor from 2006 would have an 11-digit serial starting with ‘2006’.

There’s other information contain in the 9- and 11-digit serials of this era. The four digits after the year indicate the month and date production started, and the final three digits mark where the guitar falls in the total number produced that day.

Here’s an example to go off of: 20040409008

This would be the eighth Taylor made on April, 9th 2004.

Starting in 2009, Taylor adopted a new system which changes the order and information contained in the serial a bit. These serials follow a 10-digit format with the years falling in the second and seventh positions in the sequence. The first digit indicates which factory the guitar was made in (1 for El Cajon and 2 for Tecate), while digits three through six reveal the date of production.

Here’s an example of the most recent serial format in action: 1112122002

This serial would be for the second guitar produced in the El Cajon Taylor factory on December 12, 2012.

Taylor guitars have been produced since 1974 and have used three serial number systems over
the years.
The current dating method is one of the simplest to decipher the exact year of manufacture and provides additional information.

Where to find the serial number
You can find the serial numbers on the label in the sound hole of the guitar or on the inside of the neck block.

Taylor history in short

Taylor Guitars is an acoustic guitar manufacturer and was founded in 1974 by Bob Taylor and Kurt Listug. They had met a year earlier in a repair shop for musical instruments. Bob already had a lot of experience in building acoustic guitars and Kurt wanted to start his own business. This was achieved with Taylor as a professional and innovator and Listug was responsible for the business side. In a short time their company grew into a leading global manufacturer of high quality acoustic guitars. Today, in their ultra-modern factories (El Cajon, California, USA and Tecate, Baja California, Mexico) with more than 900 employees, hundreds of guitars are produced every day. In early 2011 the company opened a Taylor distribution center in the Netherlands to serve the European market.

Halfway through 1977 a switch was made from a 5-digit to a 3-digit serial number.

4 digit serial number When the model 410 was introduced in 1991, it was given a unique serial number.
The serial number has a 4- plus four more digits. For example: 4-1133.
This system was only used for two years, 0001-1121 in 1991 and 1122-3152 in 1992.

9 digit serial number A nine-digit serial number was used from 1993 to the end of 1999. The production date and model were processed in this.

The first two digits indicate the year. — 96 = 1996.
The third and fourth digits represent the month. — 05 = May.
The fifth and sixth digits are the day of the month. — 22 = 22th (May).
The seventh digit indicates the model. — 4 = Big Baby.
[0 = 300 or 400 Series, 1 = 500 through Presentation Series, 2 = 200 Series, 3 = Baby or Big Baby , 4 = Big Baby, 5 = T5, 7 = through 2002, 8 = 100 Series, and 9 = Solid Body Series.]
The last two digits indicate the sequential production number for that day. — 34 is the 34th guitar of 22 May 1996. 11-Digit Serial Numbers For a four-digit year designation, the 9-digit serial number was
replaced by an 11-digit from January 2000 to October 2009.
The coding is the same as with 9 digit serial numbers, only not the
first 2 digits but the first 4 digits do determine the year.
Example: 2008 06 05 8 12
The first four digits now indicate the year. — 2008 = 2008.
The fifth and sixth digits represent the month. — 06 = June.
The seventh and eighth digits are the day of the month. — 05 = de 5th (June).
The ninth digit indicates the model. — 8 = 100 Series.

10-Digit Serial Numbers The current serial numbering format has 10 digits and was introduced in November 2009. There has go back to a 2-digit year designation. The location of manufacture is also included in this format.
Example: 1 1 08 13 7 123
The first digit indicates the location where the guitar was
produced. — 1 = El Cajon, California, USA.
[1 = El Cajon, California, USA; 2 = Tecate, Baja California, Mexico]
The second and seventh digits indicate a 2 digit year. — 17 = 2017.
The third and fourth digits represent the month. — 08 = August.
The fifth and sixth digits represent the day
of the month. — 13 = 13th (August).
The last three digits indicate the sequential production number for
that day. — 123 is the 123th guitar of 13 August 2017.

10-Digit Serial Numbers

Our current 10-digit serial numbering format that started in November of 2009 identifies where the guitar was built, the start date, and the assigned number of the guitar on that day’s production schedule. For example, the serial number for the first guitar built in the El Cajon (USA) factory on July 6, 2014 is 1107064001. See the explanation below:

1107064001 First digit indicates where it was made. (1 = El Cajon, California, USA; 2 = Tecate, Baja California, Mexico)

1107064001 2nd & 7th digits indicate the two-digit year — ’14 (2014)

1107064001 3rd & 4th digits indicate the two-digit month — 07 (July)

1107064001 5th & 6th digits indicate the day — 06 (the 6th)

1107064001 Last three numbers indicate the guitar’s position in that day’s production sequence.

9-Digit Serial Numbers

From 1993 until the end of 1999, each Taylor guitar featured a nine-digit serial number that pinpoints when work began on that guitar, along with its series and production position. See the explanation for serial number 980311301 below:

980311301 First two digits indicate the year — 98 (1998)

980311301 3rd & 4th digits indicate the two-digit month — 03 (March)

980311301 5th & 6th digit indicate the day — 11 (the 11th)

980311301 7th digit is a series code number — 0 for 300 or 400 Series, 1 for 500 through Presentation Series, 2 for 200 Series, 3 for a Baby or Big Baby (through 2002), 4 for a Big Baby (2003-2009), 5 for a T5, 7 for Nylon Series, 8 for 100 Series, and 9 for SolidBody Series. This example is number 3, a Baby.

980311301 Last two digits indicate the guitar’s position in that day’s production sequence.

11-Digit Serial Numbers

January 2000 — October 2009, the serial number expanded from 9 to 11 digits to accommodate the four-digit year designation. Other than the first four digits noting the year, it’s decoded the same as the 9-digit serial numbers. See the explanation for serial number 20070311301 below:

20070311301 First four digits indicate the year — 2007

20070311301 5th & 6th digits indicate the two-digit month — 03 (March)

20070311301 7th & 8th digits indicate the day — 11 (the 11th)

20070311301 9th digit is a series code number — 0 for 300 or 400 Series, 1 for 500 through Presentation Series, 2 for 200 Series, 3 for a Baby or Big Baby (through 2002), 4 for a Big Baby (2003-2009), 5 for T5, 6 for T3, 7 for Nylon Series, 8 for 100 Series, and 9 for SolidBody Series. This example is number 3, a Baby.

The two oldest verified serial numbers are 00109 and 10109. Record keeping in the early days was spotty and it’s uncertain which guitar is actually the first one, but these two were built within the first few months of Taylor Guitars production.

Привет, читатель! В этой статье речь пойдет о поддельных гитарах. Здесь я собрал советы, которые помогут избежать покупки поддельной гитары или, хотя бы не переплатить необоснованно завышенную цену за инструмент, который продавец выдает за фирменный (иногда по своей собственной неосведомленности, а иногда и умышленно). Статья будет полезна всем, кто собирается покупать инструмент дороже 300 долларов, особенно в условиях постоянного роста продаж через интернет. Также я приведу информацию о серийных номерах гитар фирмы Fender, и дам ссылки на ресурсы где можно проверить гитары Fender, Yamaha, Ibanez, Gibson и др. по серийному номеру.

На эту статью меня вдохновило видео с Youtube канала Phillip McKnight, в котором автор получил заказ на ремонт электрогитары фирмы Mayones, как оказалось поддельной. В нем он изложил основные моменты, на которые следует обращать внимание при покупке дорогих инструментов, особенно с рук, чтобы не потерять свои деньги и, что более важно, рассмотрел психологию покупателя и продавца.

Как отличить подделку гитары

Вот на что нужно обратить внимание:

1. Качество сборки
2. Шрифты (серийные номера, логотипы, цифры на ручках громкости/тембра и т.п. если они есть )
3. Лаковые покрытия (satin finish, glossy nitro finish)
4. Уметь отличать сорта одной породы деревьев (например Brazilian rosewood от Amazone rosewood и др.)
5. Желательно знать историю производства инструментов, технологии, материалы и др.

Давайте на примере гитары Mayones разберемся на что нужно обращать внимание обязательно.

1. Поддельные гитары выглядят дёшево

И в руках тоже чувствуются как дешевка. К сожалению, новички не часто могут это заметить из-за банальной нехватки опыта. Поэтому желательно иметь более опытного друга, который поможет вам в случае необходимости.

2. Качественные инструменты отличает прежде всего внимание к деталям

Одним из ключевых компонентов себестоимости любого продукта является время. Для уменьшения себестоимости и, соответственно, увеличения прибыли время производства нужно сокращать. Достигается это двумя путями — усовершенствованием технологического процесса (например переход на ЧПУ станки вместо ручного труда) или за счет, например, менее качественной подгонки деталей, нарушения технологического процесса, отсутствия контроля качества и т.п.

Покупая гитару скажем за 1000$ и видя неаккуратную работу всегда спросите себя: «зачем уважаемому производителю выпускать инструмент с явными косметическими косяками?». Особенно если гитара выпущена на небольшой бутиковой фабрике.

Представьте если бы Fodera начала выпускать бас гитары с такими щелями на крышке тембр-блока и продавать их за тысячи долларов? Нонсенс.

Еще один пример из видео — кривая склейка грифа. Обратите внимание, как правая светлая декоративная проставка уходит в сторону от центральной оси грифа.

3. В поддельных гитарах всегда используются дешевые компоненты

Обратите внимание на звукосниматели, их тоже часто подделывают, бридж, колки, порожек и др. Например на бридже могут остаться заусенцы или неровности после обработки, также может быть разница в покрытии, например дешевый хром вместо полировки металла. Все это можно заметить при детальном осмотре инструмента.

Обратите внимание как неаккуратно установлен порожек на этой гитаре.

Себестоимость гитары всегда состоит из материалов, потраченных на ее изготовление и времени.

Вход в этот «бизнес» может быть не только в классе hi-end инструментов. Заработок может начинаться уже на инструментах с ценовым порогом в 300 долларов при себестоимости гитары в 50-100 долларов.

Психология покупателя

Частая схема при разводе — сильно заниженный ценник.

В таких ситуациях покупатель всегда ставится в невыгодное для него положение, а именно ощущение срочности, нехватки времени на обдумывание, «сейчас или никогда». Все это может сопровождаться какой-нибудь историей, даже очень похожей на правду. Это излюбленный трюк продавцов различного поддельного барахла. Ощущение эйфории от «вкусной сделки» просто притупляет критическое мышление, и когда оно проходит, ты с удивлением обнаруживаешь очевидные вещи, которые просто кричат «этот товар поддельный!»

В странах СНГ вы, к сожалению, никак не защищены законом при покупке поддельной брендовой гитары. Вы можете только написать заявление в полицию по ст.159 УК РФ по факту мошенничества. В Штатах же, где с этим делом намного строже, можно получить реальный приговор суда за незаконное использование торговой марки.

Чек-лист при покупке гитары

1. Узнайте серийный номер инструмента, чтобы по-возможности пробить его по базе производителя. Этот пункт нужно выполнять ВСЕГДА при покупке гитар.
2. Найдите фото оригинального инструмента той же модели для сравнения. Скачайте с официального сайта производителя или найдите другой достоверный источник.
3. Обратите внимание на формы инструмента, пропорции и размеры его составляющих. Сравните с фото оригинальной модели если возникли сомнения.
4. Обратите внимание на качество изготовления и сборки инструмента. Про это очень подробно написано выше.
5. Проверьте логотип. На этом очень часто «палятся» — вспомните Adibas 🙂
6. Оригинальный кейс, инструкция, прочая брендовая мелочевка — признаки фирменного инструмента.
7. Если сомневаетесь, спросите коллег на музыкальных форумах или в группах ВК. Одна из групп, где можно спросить помощи при опознании гитары — «Басисты Вконтакте»

Гитары фирмы Fender имеют очень богатую историю и можно смело утверждать, что это самые популярные гитары за всю историю. Лео Фендер начал делать гитары в 1950 году, а всего через год он сделал первую бас гитару. В истории компании можно выделить три основных периода:

• Оригинальная компания под руководством самого Лео Фендера с 1946 to 1965. (Обычно этот период еще называют “Pre-CBS”)
• С 1965 по 1985 компания Fender принадлежала CBS — Columbia Broadcasting System (“CBS era Fender”)

Система серийных номеров Fender немного запутанна и номера могут перекрывать друг друга. Серийный номер на тыльной стороне грифа появился только в 1976 году и начинался с буквы, которая обозначала год выпуска гитары: S для 70-х, E для 80-х, N для 90-х и для Z для 00-х. До этого серийные номера штамповались или писались карандашом на пятке грифа (дата производства грифа) или в пазе для грифа на корпусе, а также на металлической пластине крепления грифа к корпусу сзади гитары.
