“Girls Like You” by Maroon 5 Ukulele Chords & Strumming

Skill Level: Beginner

Learn to play «Girls Like You» by Maroon 5 on Ukulele

Play along with Evan Khay and Aldrine on the «Girls Like You» by Maroon 5 Ukulele Play-Along. In this cover, Evan and Aldrine decided to play the song in the Key of F, using 4 simple chords and 1 inversion. If you need some extra help, start with STEP 1 below:

STEP 1 — The Chords

First, check out and learn the 4 main chords for this cover:

F(2010), C(0003), Dm(2210), Bb(3211)

For now, just memorize the chords and practice switching between them in that order. If you are counting a steady «1, 2, 3, 4 . » then hold a chord and strum down on «1.» Use the «2, 3, 4» to get ready for the next chord and strum down on the next «1.» When you can strum each chord on «1» and change chords smoothly during the «2, 3, 4,» then you’re all set to play the song!

In addition, Aldrine uses an inversion for the C chord during the chorus:

C(5433)

So if you want, you can try substituting the new inversion for the regular C(0003) chord when you practice through the chord progression. Use either version to try playing along with the Play-Along at the top of the page, just using simple down strums on each chord. Great job! Now you’re ready to add some simple rhythm to your playing.

STEP 2 — Beginner Rhythm

Now that you know how to hold the chords and switch to them at the right times, practice a simple rhythm for this song. Instead of just strumming on «1» try strumming down on all of the beats: «1, 2, 3, 4.» Use the space between the «4» and the next «1» to quickly switch to the next chord.

This might be a challenge, but practice until you get it down. Next, you want to emphasize beat «3» by playing your down strum just a little harder than the rest. When you can do this consistently, you pretty much have the basic rhythm down. Try playing along with the Play-Along at the top of the page, trying to add more rhythm to your playing. Awesome job, you just played the beginner version of this song!

STEP 3 — The Picking Riff

Instead of strumming during the verses, Aldrine picks the background riff using a palm mute. To learn the basics of palm muting, check out the following video:

For more direction on how to play the picking, download the TAB. Aldrine plays a couple different versions of this picking during the Play-Along. Use the following video to learn and practice Riff Picking Version 1:

Aldrine plays it this way only once, at the start of the song and then switches to Picking Version 2. It’s very similar to Version 1, with key differences towards the end of the riff. Use the following video to practice Riff Picking Version 2:

Aldrine based both of these pickings loosely on the original riff in the Maroon 5 song. At the bottom of the Picking TAB there is also a Version 3, which follows the original riff more closely.

You definitely don’t need to play the picking in order to play along with the song. But if you are able to practice and get it down, try playing along with the Play-Along at the top of the page. Congrats, you just played the intermediate version of this song!

Have fun with this song and let us know what you think! And if you have any questions, we’re always here to help you out. Keep strummin’!
